Jimmy is the only man who, after his divorce, still has to deal with his disapproving, meddling mother-in-law. When his ex-wife volunteers to go to east Africa to help the victims of a natural disaster, weekend-dad Jimmy agrees to take care of their two teenage kids full time in an attempt to win her back!。穆德（David Duchovny 大卫•杜楚尼饰）被外星反叛者劫持，而斯科莉（Gillian Anderson 吉莲•安德森饰）亦同时发现自己怀有身孕。穆德的办公室被搜查，斯科莉请求Skinner（Mitch Pileggi 饰）帮助寻找搭档，孤枪侠也参与进来。FBI高层则派出探员约翰•多格特（Robert Patrick 罗伯特•帕特立克饰）协助调查，但两个人的初次会面不欢而散。 调查局发现穆德的单位密码和信用卡在失踪后的几天都有使用纪录，甚至发现了刻有穆德生卒年月的墓碑。多格特认为穆德假装失踪，以便盗取资料独自调查。案情愈加扑朔迷离……。
